Solar Panel Bird Proofing in Anglesey: A Guide

Roof Improvements · 25 September 2026 · 3 min read

Solar panel bird proofing should begin with checking what is happening around the panels. A suitable proposal needs to consider the array, the roof, any birds using the space and the panel manufacturer’s requirements. Mesh should not be fitted simply because a gap is visible.

Describe the activity you have noticed

Note where birds appear to enter, when you hear activity and whether you have seen nesting material from the ground. A photograph of the whole array helps explain the layout, while a short description helps distinguish occasional perching from repeated use of the space beneath it.

Do not reach under panels, move nests or climb onto the roof to investigate. Tell the assessor if you believe birds are nesting so this can be addressed before any exclusion work is planned.

Active nests need proper consideration

Natural Resources Wales explains that wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected. It is an offence to intentionally damage or destroy a nest while it is in use or being built; some species have additional protection.

Do not assume a calendar date makes removal acceptable. If a nest may be active, pause the proposed work and seek appropriate guidance. Any relevant licensing question must be resolved before work that could affect protected birds or nests proceeds.

Check compatibility with your solar installation

Keep the panel make, model and installation paperwork available if you have them. Ask whether the proposed guard and fixing method are compatible with that equipment and its warranty conditions. A generic promise that a product suits all panels is not enough.

Ask the installer to explain how the guard will be attached and how the array can remain accessible for future maintenance. Any proposed drilling, alteration or contact with electrical components should be clarified with the appropriate solar specialist.

Look beyond the visible edge

A quote should identify which sides and openings are being addressed, including awkward corners and changes in roof level. Ask how the proposed arrangement fits around the particular array rather than assuming a straight length of mesh solves every gap.

Discuss access equipment and protection of the roof covering. If existing debris or damage is found, the proposal should explain what is included and what will need a separate assessment.

Questions to ask before accepting a quote

Request the product description, fixing method, access arrangements and any preparation included. Ask how the work will be checked on completion and what photographs or written information will be provided.

Clarify any warranty offered and what it covers. Also ask how the protection should be inspected in future and who to contact if it becomes detached. Avoid treating bird proofing as a guarantee that birds will never perch anywhere on the roof.

Arrange solar panel protection in Anglesey

Send your postcode, a photograph taken from the ground and a brief account of the activity. Say whether the panels are on the main house, an extension or another building, and mention difficult access.

Our solar panel protection page is the starting point for an enquiry. For wider upkeep around the array, see our coastal roofline maintenance guide. A planned assessment is the right first step before choosing a product or installation date.
